My name is Cheryl Mullins and I have always been an active and engaged person with a love for beauty and nature. Growing up in East Tennessee, the mountains were a place of escape to the streams, rivers and paths through the forests. Movement in God’s creation was a huge part of health for me. It not only brought physical wellness to my body but an inner spiritual rest of seeing the Lord’s hand all around me.
Health and wellness is a topic dear to my heart. For much of my life, my idea of health was getting fresh air, exercising, and competing in sports or activities. In fact, one of my first jobs while in college was at the YMCA helping adults with their exercise routines and leading Kiddie Kamp with 3-5 year olds with games, activities and swimming. After marriage, I acquired a job as the Recreation Coordinator for students at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO. Later, I graduated from Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, MO with a degree in Recreation Management with an emphasis in Therapeutic and Special Needs. I was then employed at Maple Woods Community College as Student Activities Coordinator. Activity and movement is a passion for me and continues to this day with camping, hiking, exercise, and anything outdoors.

It wasn’t until about five years ago that another level of health and wellness took precedence - diet! The Lord began to press upon my life the need to eat and feed more nutritious food to my family. Veritas Medical played a huge part in educating and directing me in the area of food and diet. Before that time, I had been heavy into the couponing phase to save money. I realized that much of what I was purchasing was processed, nonperishable foods with little to no nutrition (except fortified vitamins) and contained too much sugar! Cereal, boxed snacks, crackers, chips, pop tarts, bread, frozen processed foods, canned soups and noodles were the staples in the pantry. My family and I were consuming these junk foods along with modified wheat, added sugar and unhealthy oils. I was saving money, but my family was suffering at mealtime. When health problems began to materialize, I knew that changes needed to be incorporated. Sometimes, the Lord grabs our attention in ways to point to a greater outcome, and the body is a great way to get our attention!
So I began to search my kitchen and identify the problem causing foods. Cleaning and eliminating the tempting, comfort food was first priority before adding the beneficial food. It reminded me of how the Lord is dealing with His people now. There are many areas of spiritual disease that have taken root in the body and the Lord is pressing us to discern where the enemy has taken residence and expel them. Before the new things of God can be fully implemented to maturity, the old has to be removed! The scripture speaks in Luke 5:36-39 of what happens when new wine is put into old wineskins. It will burst, spill out and the wineskins will be ruined. The new wine must be put into new wineskins to be preserved. So, in the natural I had to move towards healthier eating. Old eating habits are very difficult to break. However, breaking those habits is much better than trips to the doctor and or prescriptions!
My focus now is on nutritious and dense foods that have experienced very little change in the process from farm to table. It is just natural God given food. When I go to the grocery store or local farm, I try to stay with the organic fresh vegetables, vine ripe fruits, local grass-fed meats, organic nuts, ancient grains and spices, healthy fats and oils, raw dairy products and fermented foods. Foods such as these can be your prescription for healthy cells that provide greater vitamins, minerals and nutrients to benefit all your body’s needs. Sadly, we are a nation on the American diet which is actually making us sick. Food is the beginning and just one part of the complete picture of health and wellness. I look forward to sharing with you more things I have learned that have made a personal difference in mine and my family’s life!
